Decommissioned Reactors ( gross ):

The Indian Point nuclear power plant (English Indian Point Energy Center (IPEC ) ) consists of three pressurized water reactors, which were built by Westinghouse. The nuclear power plant is located in Buchanan ( New York) on the Hudson River, 55 kilometers north of New York City.

History

The three reactors were built in 1956, 1966 and 1969. The network synchronization occurred in 1962, 1973 and 1976. Reactor Unit 1 was shut down in 1974, the blocks 2 and 3 are in operation.

The nuclear power plant is located in a seismically active area and is comparatively beyond since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 as a risk for terrorism, as it is on flight paths of commercial aircraft. How we tested after 11 September 2001 if the containment would withstand a plane crash or stop. The results showed that there are scenarios in which this is not the case, and therefore the safe continued operation of the nuclear power plant would be endangered. The future of the power plant is also controversial regarding occupational accidents, especially since it is in close distance to the city of New York.

Incidents

In 2000, in block 2 due to a minor fault a scram. In order to dissipate the afterwards still present in the reactor decay heat by pumping the switchover from mains - fed had to work on power grid reference, but this was not the case. Then the emergency situation occurred, where the big diesel generators automatically turn on to provide the plant with electric power. One of the three generators of the block 2 did not work, which meant the elimination of various safety redundancies. Later, in addition erupted yet a battery, whereby a plurality of control room displays failed. The operating staff was thus partially "blind" and dependent on the functioning of the automatic transmission. The incident was rated INES 1.

On 6 April 2007, another incident occurred at the nuclear power plant. This affected the non-nuclear area. Here, a fire broke out in two transformers. This was followed by smaller explosions. No one was injured.

In May 2009 it was announced that parts of the effluent are rusted through for the emergency cooling system. The last inspection of the damaged pipe to have taken place about 1973.

In the cooling pond there should be a leak, escaping through the radioactivity into the groundwater.
