Characteristic of the genre are a relatively large number of band members, several voices and hardly typical instruments. The indie folk has in principle influences from the folk of the 1950s to 70s, folk rock and indie rock, and from Low Fidelity, country, and at times even folk - punk. There are also parallels between indie folk and New Weird America to find.

One can trace the roots of indie folk until the 1990s, when at folk singers such as Ani DiFranco at the musical influences are no longer able to distinguish between alternative rock and folk. Other pioneers of the indie folk were, among others, Elliott Smith, Will Oldham, Lou Barlow, and Jeff Buckley. Beginning of the 21st century won the indie folk popularity, a number of representatives of the genre gained through regional awareness.

Some artists of Indie Folks was given also mainstream success, such as Mumford and Sons, Noah and the Whale, The Decemberists, Jeff Buckley etc.
