History

The Democratic Party of the struggle of Indonesia was formed in 1996 from a split in the Democratic Party of Indonesia ( PDI). The PDI was later President Megawati Sukarnoputri forced out of the party, but managed to take a large number of PDI members with the new party. Megawati is still chairman of the PDI -P. In the parliamentary elections of 2004, the PDI -P received only 18.5 % of the vote and 109 seats out of 550. In 1999, the PDI -P had received 33.7 % of votes.

Even when choosing the President, the PDI -P suffered a defeat. Megawati lost in the second round with only 39 % of the vote against her challenger Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono from the Democratic Party and had to relinquish the presidency reluctantly. Despite the defeat, Megawati was elected as chairman until 2010 at a party congress in March 2005.
