Inferior vena cava

The inferior vena cava ( " IVC " ) is a powerful venous blood vessel of the chest and abdominal cavities. In animals, it is called the caudal vena cava ( " posterior vena cava ").

The inferior vena cava is formed by the confluence of the two common iliac veins in the lumbar region and attracts toward diaphragm. It passes through the vena cava hole ( foramen venae cavae ) through the diaphragm through and runs in its own Pleurafalte ( plica venae cavae ) into the right atrium of the heart. At the level of the abdominal cavity it takes the blood of the kidney, Hoden-/Eierstock- and lumbar veins. The blood of the unpaired abdominal organs that initially enters the portal vein and is directed only after passage through the liver just before the diaphragm passage through the hepatic veins into the inferior vena cava.
