Information logistics

Information logistics is concerned as a branch of information management with information flows within an organizational unit. Goal is to optimize the availability and lead times of information. In other words, the information logistics is concerned with the provision of

  • Right information
  • At the right time
  • In the correct format / in the right quality
  • For the correct addressee
  • In the right place

A slim Information Logistics focuses on the value of the information for the customer.

Methods for achieving this are

  • The analysis of information needs
  • Optimize the flow of information
  • Ensuring high flexibility in technical and organizational terms

The term was coined by the Indian mathematician and librarian SR Ranganathan.

It must be noted especially that the communication partner already owns which parts of the necessary information, and what version. Thus, the amount of information that is yet to convey to him, be reduced.

The level of knowledge is thus a meta-information - a mapping between a) any communication partner, and b) the (relevant) information that is known at the respective partner. In time-varying information is usually associated with these to distinguish a timestamp or version number.
