Infrapatellar fat pad

The infrapatellar fat pad ( corpus adiposum infrapatellar ) is located in the knee joint between the head of the tibia ( tibial condyle ), patellar tendon ( patellar ligament ) and the bottom of the kneecap ( patella).

He is, as the entire capsule inside of the joint outer skin ( membrana fibrosa ) coated. The membrane is vorgebuchtet in the amount of the fat body in the direction of joint cavity in the form of fat folds ( plicae alar ). The fat body reacts to all structural changes and infections in the internal joint with an inflammatory hypertrophy ( Hoffa Kastert syndrome). If it persists, the damage to the fat body changes fibrotic. Later can follow calcification or ossification.
