Ingham County, Michigan

Ingham County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Mason.

Geography

The County is centered in the southern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1453 square kilometers, of which five square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Shiawassee County, Livingston County, Jackson County, Eaton County and Clinton County.

History

Ingham County was formed in 1838 from parts of Shiawassee County, Washtenaw County and free territory. It was named for Samuel D. Ingham, a U.S. Treasury. The county is one of the so-called Cabinet counties since it was like some other named after a member of the cabinet of U.S. President Andrew Jackson.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Ingham County 279 320 people in 108 593 households and 63 744 families. The population density was 193 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 79.46 percent White, 10.86 percent Black or African American, 0.55 percent Native American, 3.68 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 2.42 percent from other races groups; 2.99 percent were descended from two or more races. 5.80 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 108 593 households out of which 29.8 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.0 percent were married couples living together, 12.1 percent were single mothers and 41.3 percent were non-families. 30.2 percent of all households and 7.7 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.04.

23.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 18.5 percent of 18 to 24 years 28.6 percent between 25 and 44, 20.1 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 9.4 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 40,774, and the median income for a family $ 53,063. Males have a median income of $ 40,335, women $ 30,178. The per capita income was $ 21,079. 8.3 percent of families and 14.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.

Because of the Michigan State University, which is located in Ingham County, the population share of 20 - to 24 -year-olds than average.
