Ingleborough

The Ingleborough is 723 m, the second highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales in Northern England and with a saddle height of 427 m, a Marilyn.

The mountain is located in the south-west of the Yorkshire Dales and is the highest point in a triangle formed by the towns of Ingleton, Ribblehead and Settle.

The name of the mountain derives from the Old English. The term " burh " means ' fortified place ', and in fact can be on the north and east side of the summit, the remains of a fortification recognize, which is attributed to the Celtic tribe of the Brigantes, the largest tribe of the Iron Age in Britain.

The summit is a plateau with a circumference of about 800 m, covered with a thin turf. At the summit there is a windshield with an explanation of view. On a clear day, the view extends to 166 km distant mountain Manod Mawr in Snowdonia in North Wales. Clearly visible are the mountains of the Lake District National Parks such as the Helvellyn. The view extends also over to the city of Lancaster and Morecambe Bay to the adjacent. On the summit a marker and a trigonometric point of the Ordnance Survey are (No. S. 5619 ).

Ingleborough can be climbed as part of the Three Peaks Walks from different sides.
