Ink Flag

The Ink Flag was an improvised flag of Israel, which was hoisted in the Palestine war in 1948 in the conquest of Eilat.

On March 5, 1949, the Israeli Negev and Golani Brigades began the operation Uvda. On March 10, they reached the coast of the Red Sea. As the soldiers after the bloodless capture of Eilat no Israeli flag had available, they created from a white table cloth that has been painted with writing ink, an improvised flag. The Star of David came from a first - aid kit. The flag was then hoisted by the soldiers Avraham Adan at Eilat. A captured soldiers from Micah Perry Photo of the operation was later compared with the iconic American photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima.

In the city a bronze sculpture by artist Bernard Reder commemorates the event.
