Innocenzo Cybo

Innocenzo Cibo ( born August 25, 1491 Florence, † September 23, 1550 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal.

Family

Innocenzo Cibo was born the son of Franceschetto Cybo and Maddalena di Lorenzo de ' Medici, and therefore grandson of Pope Innocent VIII and Lorenzo the Magnificent. After education at the court of the Medici, he was raised by his uncle Leo X. Cardinal. 1517 he was appointed cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Domnica. In 1520 he was archbishop of Genoa and papal legate in Bologna. In the year of his death in 1550 he became cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Via Lata.

Life

Cibo amassed title of bishop, the church of Saint - Andrews, Marseille, Aleria (Corsica), Mariana and Ventimiglia.

Shortly before the sack of Rome, he took refuge with his sister Ricciarda Malaspina.

He had an important role in the coronation of Emperor Charles V in Bologna in 1530.

Two years later he was commissioned by another Medici pope Clement VII, with the government of the Duchy of Florence during the absence of the Duke Alessandro de ' Medici. At the conclave after the death of Clement VII, he tried to be pope, but was by Paul III. beaten and as a result he decided to return to Florence. But here worsened its relations with Duke Cosimo I de ' Medici and then in 1540 he moved back to Massa Carrara.

In Rome he had his residence in the Palazzo Altemps. Following the surrender of the city he again took part in the conclave, the Julius III. chose; he died a few months later, leaving behind four children.
