Innokenty Smoktunovsky

Innokenty Smoktunowski Mikhailovich (Russian Иннокентий Михайлович Смоктуновский, scientific transliteration Innokentij Michajlovič Smoktunovskij; born March 18, 1925 in Tatjanowka, Tomsk Oblast, Siberia; † August 3, 1994 in Moscow) was a Russian actor.

Life

Smoktunowskis ancestors were Polish Jews who had been exiled after the January Uprising of 1863 in Siberia. He, who participated as a member of the Red Army in World War II and thereby came to Berlin began his career in 1946 as an actor in the theater of Norilsk ( Siberia) and Krasnoyarsk. Later he came to Moscow and Leningrad, where he played under the direction of Georgi Tovstonogov at the Bolshoi Drama Theatre. From 1972 he worked at the Maly Theatre in 1976 at the Moscow Art Theatre.

His film career began in Mikhail Romm's film Ubijstwo na ulize Dante (1956) and in Soldaty (1956 ) by Alexander Ivanov. In addition, he starred in the movie Nine Days of One Year (1962), in which Mikhail Romm directed. He became internationally known in the title role of Grigori Kosinzews Hamlet ( 1964). For his portrayal of the composer Igor Talankins Tchaikovsky (1969 ) he was awarded the Best Actor Award at the International Film Festival of San Sebastián.

In the fairy tale The Princess and the Pea 1976 Smoktunowski played the king.

Smoktunowski was private friend of the actor Georgi Schschonow, with whom he appeared in 1966 in Eldar Ryazanov's comedy Beregis Awtomobilja ( German caution, car thief ).

In 1974 he was honored with the title People's Artist of USSR ( Народный артист СССР ) and 1990 the title Hero of Socialist Labor ( Герой Социалистического Труда ).
