Insein Prison

The Insein Prison (pronounced like the English " insane" for insane ) is the administrative district of Yangon Division, near Yangon in Myanmar. It is run by the military junta and used in large part for the suppression of political dissidents.

The Burmese Ministry of Interior gives figures of around 400 security guards and 5,000 prisoners. Independent estimates suggest up to 10,000 prisoners.

The prison is known worldwide for its degrading and dirty conditions and torture. Among the most famous inmates include the human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, who was imprisoned for several months here in 2009.
