The European Installation Bus ( EIB ) is a standard according to EN 50090, in the current version as KNX standard and ISO / IEC 14543-3,

  • Describes how when installing sensors and actuators in a building can be linked together,
  • Specifies how sensors and actuators need to communicate with each other (the protocol ).

The official name is now only KNX (see story).

The KNX controls, for example, lighting and shutters or shading devices, building heating and locking and alarm. By means of EIB (KNX) is the remote monitoring and control of a building possible. A control is done via the user himself or of an equipped computer with appropriate software.

KNX is currently being installed mainly in new residential and commercial buildings, but can be retrofitted in the modernization of old buildings. It KNX networks are already integrated as standard into the building even inexpensive prefabricated houses.

History

In the mid- 1980s have been stimulated in parallel by different companies, the first considerations for the application of bus technologies for electrical installation technology and building technology. It has been recognized that the launch of proprietary systems, a broad market penetration would stand in the way and the owners would give a wide variety of proprietary "standards" and "systems". Leading manufacturers of electrical installation technology have in 1990 as part of the European Installation Bus Association ( EIBA ) ( founding members were Berker, Jung, Gira, Merten and Siemens) and later the KNX Association ( KNX standard ) together with the goal of a default in the introduce market. This standard ensures compatibility and interoperability between the various devices and systems of different manufacturers in many areas, not only of electrical installation technology, but also from other areas such as climate and ventilation and household appliances (eg cookers).

After first products were offered in accordance with this standard in 1991 on the market, there are now nearly 4,000 product groups with a multiple of different products from over 200 companies. These products cover the various trades and applications in the building in compliance with the interchangeability of the products so that they can work together in a running with the KNX system.

Meanwhile, KNX, the first open world standard for home and building automation. This is regulated in Europe since 1994 in EN 50090th The standardization by ISO is done as a standard ISO / IEC 14543-3.
