Inter-Agency Standing Committee

The Inter-Agency Standing Committee (English Inter- Agency Standing Committee, IASC ) is an agency of the United Nations with the task of coordinating humanitarian assistance, both between UN agencies and non- UN organizations to improve.

The establishment of the IASC was adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 1991 by General Assembly resolution 46/182 ( "Strengthening the coordination of humanitarian relief operations of the United Nations "). In fact, the committee was set up in June 1992. In December 1993, the task of the IASC as the primary coordination mechanism for humanitarian relief operations by the General Assembly confirmed ( resolution 48 /57)

Under the leadership of the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator of the IASC develops humanitarian principles, agreed clear division of responsibility for various aspects of humanitarian assistance, identifies and treats gaps in relief operations and advises on the effective application of humanitarian policies.

Together with the Executive Committee on Humanitarian Affairs ( ECHA), the IASC forms the key strategic coordination mechanism among major humanitarian aid organizations.

Operation

The main body is the so-called IASC Working Group in meeting the directors of the programs involved. The Working Group meets three times a year (March, June / July and November), in the headquarters of one of the programs involved. The meeting places change so between New York, Geneva, Rome and Nairobi. It is headed by the Geneva Office Director of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ( OCHA).

In addition, subordinate working groups can be used.

The IASC operates a secretariat in Geneva, which, inter alia, is responsible for the communication and coordination, as well as the preparation of the meetings.
