Inter Press Service (IPS ) is an international news agency with the main topic coverage of developing countries, civil society and globalization.

According to the company IPS aims to give disadvantaged people and groups a voice to tell from the perspective of developing countries and reflect the views of civil society. Equality between men and women ( the so-called gender mainstreaming) is also seen as a priority in reporting such as the assessment of the effects of globalization. Offered are mainly reports and features, as well as background information.

History

Inter Press Service was founded in 1964 as an international non-profit cooperative of journalists Italian journalist Roberto Savio and the Argentine political scientist Pablo Piacentini. The initial goal of IPS was to close the " information gap " between Europe and Latin America, which had opened up after the Cuban Revolution of 1959 ( Giffard in Salwen and Garrison, 1991).

Later, the agency expanded to all continents and expanded its editorial focus. In 1994, IPS was the legal status of a non-profit organization for development cooperation.

IPS is a non-governmental organization in consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council ( ECOSOC ) and the OECD status of the official development assistance - eligible international non-governmental organization (NGO) nowadays.

Organization and financing

IPS is headquartered in Rome. Five regional offices also coordinate the worldwide network of correspondents: Montevideo ( Regional Office for Latin America ), Berlin- London (Europe and Mediterranean), New Delhi (Asia and Pacific), New York ( North America and the Caribbean) and Johannesburg (Africa). Most journalists to report from their home country.

IPS is financed by subscribers and media customers, as recipients of multilateral and international programs of development cooperation and project financing from foundations. IPS is, according to Rauch ( 2003: 89) in about the sixth largest international news service.

Services

All kinds of media and civil society and UN organizations are among the subscribers of IPS. There are also numerous individuals who receive the free news service on the Internet in English and Spanish and in translation in ten more languages ​​, namely Arabic, German, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese, Swedish and Swahili.

In addition, IPS published a newsletter during various events such as UN conferences and the World Social Forum. In addition to the IPS news service offers advanced training for journalists and maintains project partnerships with civil society organizations and social movements.

Assessment

Currently taking IPS in the international media landscape only a marginal position (cf. Boyd - Barrett and Rantanen, 1998: 175 ). Reasons for this are, among others:
