Interior Gateway Protocol

As an Interior Gateway Protocol ( IGP) routing protocols are referred to, which are used within autonomous systems.

Unlike Exterior Gateway Protocols ( EGP) they are characterized by their special skills in dealing with complex network topologies. Also functions to traffic engineering such as OSPF -TE can be found.

The EGPs used usually follow on from the ensured by the IGPs infrastructure. Therefore, in the normal case for each network protocol EGP runs exactly parallel with exactly one IGP.

Variants

Depending on the topology of the network are nowadays mostly used:

  • OSPF
  • EIGRP
  • IS-IS

Due to their age or their simple structure rarely used:

  • RIP
  • IGRP
