Internal transcribed spacer

Spacer or separating DNA sequences can be found on the DNA between genes, eg between the groups arranged rRNA genes (rDNA). In the case of rRNA genes, the spacer sequences can be rewritten along with the rRNA genes in a single primary transcript. The spacer sequences are then excised from the primary transcript. This guarantees the production of the same amount of the gene products.
