International Arctic Science Committee

The International Arctic Science Committee (IASC ) is a non-governmental organization composed of international science team. The main research area is the Arctic. The IASC aims to promote Arctic research and the scientific understanding of the Arctic and its role in the Earth system.

The IASC was established in 1990 and has its secretariat in Potsdam.

The tasks of the IASC are to promote Arctic research. For this, among other conferences, long-term projects or workshops are conducted. Sub-organizations are established for specific goals. Specifically, are the following:

  • IPY (International Polar Year ): Participation in the International Polar Year 2007/2008
  • ISAC (International study of Arctic Change): An international study on global change in the Arctic
  • ICARP ( International Conference on Arctic Research Planning): In November 2005 a conference was held in Copenhagen, should plan and coordinate the Arctic Research of the next 10 to 15 years.
  • ACIA ( Arctic Climate Impact Assessment): created in collaboration with the Arctic Council inventory of climate change in the Arctic and its impact.
  • ( Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks) SAON: To make all observational data from the Arctic for scientists to more easily accessible, SAON was launched. This project collects and manages all the data obtained.
