International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property

ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property ), the International Research Center for historic preservation and restoration of cultural heritage based in Rome.

History

The decision to found the ICCROM was decided at the 9th session of the General Conference of UNESCO in New Delhi in 1956. 1959 saw the establishment in Rome as " International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property ." After interim changes of name as "The Rome Centre " or " The International Centre for Conservation ", the abbreviation ICCROM was developed in 1978 and has since been officially used.

Organization

In close cooperation with UNESCO initiated ICCROM international campaigns and organized scientific missions to support projects of conservation and restoration of cultural property of the Member States.

110 Member States ( 2010) support the ICCROM. Several organizations have the status of associate members.

Projects

ICCROM was committed to the preservation of ancient tombs in the Nile Valley, restoration of the wall paintings in churches in Moldova, the development of a national conservation research center in India and protection of cultural heritage after floods or earthquakes in Guatemala, Italy and Montenegro. ICCROM was a signatory to the Charter of Venice.

The center founded an international library and documentation center, which presents itself as an indispensable resource for research and training in heritage conservation and restoration of cultural property.
