International Council of Unitarians and Universalists

The ICUU ( International Council of Unitarians and Universalists ) is a global network of Unitarians, Universalists and " Unitarian Universalists ". Organizations from 23 countries have joined forces founded in March 1995 in Essex (Massachusetts, USA) Council. Every two years there is a meeting in which the priorities for joint work to be redefined. The aim is in particular to strengthen the international network of heterogeneous member groups. The member organizations of ICUU represent approximately 500,000 people around the world who belong to this religious tradition. While smaller organizations that have joined the ICUU, only have a few hundred members, there is the Unitarian Universalist Association ( UUA ) in the U.S. from about 200,000 members. The UUA had a special interest in the establishment of ICUU because in the years a large crowd of organizations outside the United States was reported previously, members of the UUA wanted to be. Since the UUA but did not see himself as a global umbrella organization, they supported the establishment of ICUU both organizationally and financially.

Principles and Guidelines

PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE ICUU ( International Council of Unitarians and Universalists ):

We, the member groups of the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists affirm our belief that we form a religious community; it is based on

  • The freedom of conscience and independent thought in matters of faith,
  • The value and dignity of each person is his own,
  • Justice and compassion in relationships with others,
  • The responsible and careful handling of the Earth's ecosystem,
  • Our commitment to democratic principles;

We set ourselves the goal of

  • The non- ending life force and the human community to serve by strengthening the global faith of Unitarian Universalists and,
  • The diversity and maintain the richness of our lived traditions,
  • Mutual assistance between the member organizations to develop,
  • To promote our ideals and principles of the world,
  • Provide conceptual models with liberal religious answers to the search for meaning of people that maintain our common values ​​.
