International Democrat Union

The International Democratic Union is a working group of 56 conservative and Christian Democratic parties. Another 30 parties belong to a single regional subgroup. The youth organization is the IYDU.

Founding members

The IDU was founded on 24 June 1983 in London with Alois Mock became the first chairman. The 19 founding members and their signatories were:

The IDU provides a forum that enables base for contacts, discussions and the formation of networks of conservative and Christian parties in the world.

Current chairman is the former Australian Prime Minister John Howard. He and the other officers of the IDU are elected by a three to four -yearly Summit of Chairmen of member parties. January Petersen ( Norway), William Hague ( UK) and Shane Stone ( Australia) are Howard's deputy, Eirik Moen holds the post of General Secretary. From the German CDU and CSU are and Peter Hintze and Erwin Huber as Vice President on the Board of IDU.
