International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences

The International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences ( IESBS ) is an English-language encyclopedia of social and behavioral science in 26 volumes, published in 2001 in the publishing house Elsevier. It was edited by Neil J. Smelser, the sociologist and the psychologist Paul Baltes.

The encyclopedia consists of approximately 4000 items, which are divided into 39 "sections". The encyclopedia contains some 150 biographical articles. Volumes 25 and 26 are index volumes with name indexes and a content indexing. The 24 text volumes contain a total of 16,695 printed pages.

The IESBS is chargeable accessible online. The preface, introduction, and summaries of articles, topics and authors are - with abstracts - Play Free Online visible.

The journal "Contemporary Psychology " has described the IESBS as "the greatest body of knowledge," " that exists in the social sciences and the behavioral sciences ."

Organization

Besides the two main editors Baltes and Smelser and the "Section Editor " that were each responsible for a substantive section, there was a " International Advisory Board", the selection of the "Section Editor " has contributed, among other things.

Predecessor

Related, earlier encyclopaedias of this type are the Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, in 15 volumes 1930-1935 of ERA Seligman and A. Johnson was issued and the 17 -volume International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, published in 1968 by David L. Sills published by Macmillan and appeared a second edition in 2008. These encyclopedias are, however, no direct organizational connection with the IESBS, but are independent companies.
