International Holocaust Cartoon Competition

The International Holocaust cartoon contest (International Holocaust Cartoon Competition) was proclaimed in February 2006 by the Iranian newspaper Hamshahri, which is published by the Tehran municipality. A total of 1100 submissions from 60 countries were received. The competition was condemned, among others, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the organization Reporters Without Borders and the Anti-Defamation League.

The competition was announced in response to the Danish Mohammed cartoons. His goal was, according to the initiators, find out how far along the freedom of western society. When publishing the Muhammad cartoons was covered by freedom of expression, should also be allowed Holocaust cartoons. The contest was widely criticized as a call for Holocaust denial, and even individual Iranian intellectuals were critical. In response to competition from Israeli antisemitic cartoons contest was organized by two Israeli artists.

The editor Flemming Rose of Jyllands-Posten, which had published the Muhammad cartoons, announced on 8 February 2006 that they would publish the Holocaust cartoons. The same day, the editor in chief Carsten Juste, Jyllands-Posten that will never print the cartoons and that Rose was sent for an indefinite period on holiday. Rose apologized days later and spoke of an error. The Danish newspaper Information printed the cartoons from six in September 2006.

On 1 November 2006, the winners of the competition were announced. The 1st prize with a prize of $ 12,000 went to the Moroccan Abdellah Derkaoui. The second prize with a prize of U.S. $ 8,000 was shared by the Brazilian Carlos Latuff and, under the pseudonym A. Chard, the Frenchwoman Françoise Pichard, who works for the right-wing magazine Rivarol. The other awards went to six Iranian nationals, a Moroccan, Jordanians, Syrians, Italians and two Brazilians.
