International Hydrographic Organization

The International Hydrographic Organization - the International Hydrographic Organization ( IHO ) - was founded in 1921 as a permanent institution under the name International Hydrographic Bureau (IHB, German: International Hydrographic Office ) established by 19 states. At the invitation of Maritime and Research enthusiastic Prince Albert I of Monaco based is set up. The current name was established in 1970, since then the IHB referred furnished in Monaco Secretariat of the Organization.

The IHO has 74 Member States ( the head of the national hydrographic institutions ) to meet their representatives at five-year intervals to International Hydrographic Conference in Monaco in 2006.

IHO publications are issued in English and French, some in Spanish.

Objective

  • Coordination of the activities of national hydrographic institutions
  • Creation of standards for the most uniform possible creation of nautical charts and documents (including electronic editions )
  • Development and optimization of reliable hydrographic research methods
  • Scientific advancement of oceanography.

INT

INT refers to charts, which were designed according to the standards proposed by the IHO publication M-4. This includes specifications for color, map drawing, lettering (nomenclature ) of charts and enables the use of spending any hydrographic institutions side by side. Cards that comply with this standard is at the violet overprint INT ... (followed by the international identification number of the work) at the top and bottom of the map recognizable.

The idea for a the entire world covering INT charts set was taken up in 1971. Fully implemented the idea is so far for of small-scale maps ( 1:10,000,000 and 1:3.500.000 ), INT - maps on a larger scale already exist for many overseas territories.

The German card 1 (INT 1) contains all at maps of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic characters ( BSH) and abbreviations used, in addition, all who see issued by BSH national map application.
