International Istanbul Film Festival

The Istanbul International Film Festival is the oldest and most important international film festival in Turkey. The festival is held every year in several cinemas in Istanbul. Period during which is currently of early to mid April.

History

The first International Istanbul Film Festival began in 1982 as a "film week " as part of the International Istanbul festivals. On display were only six films on the theme " the arts and the film ." 1983 took the festival ( under the name "Istanbul Film Days " ) is already a whole month, but was still part of the International Istanbul Festival.

Since 1984, the Film Festival is an independent event and was moved in April. Istanbul an international and a national competition there since 1985. Since 1989, is certified as an international film festival with specialized competition at the Film Producers Associations FIAPF. Specialization refers to films about literature, theater, music, dance, theater and visual arts. Parallel to this development were the Istanbul Film Festival its present name: International Istanbul Film Festival.

1996 Honorary awards and prizes for the life's work of international and local filmmakers, actors and actresses were awarded for the first time.

Structures and competitions

The movies and programming done by a selection committee and an advisory body. In international competition run exclusively films that correspond to the specialization specification by FIAPF. Furthermore, there is a national competition, Panorama section and various special programs.

The main prize of the International Competition is the Golden Tulip for the best film.
