International Lutheran Council

The International Lutheran Council ( English: International Lutheran Council - ILC) is a covenant confessional Lutheran churches in the world. It represents approximately 3.3 million Lutherans and is according to the Lutheran World Federation (LWF - about 70 million Lutherans ) is the second largest Lutheran Federation.

History

The origins of the International Lutheran Council go back to a gathering of confessional Lutheran churches in Uelzen in 1952. A further conference in 1959 in Oakland, California USA, dealt with the subject of " church communion between our Churches." For this still informal gatherings these Lutheran churches in 1963 gave the name " International Lutheran Theological Conference". During the following three decades, there were a further 11 informal meeting of the Lutheran bishops and Praesides. The International Lutheran Council in its present official figure, was founded in 1993 in Antigua, Guatemala, where these Lutheran churches have also given itself a constitution.

Denominational basis

The International Lutheran Council is a worldwide fellowship of confessional Lutheran churches, the gospel of Jesus Christ on the basis of Scripture, understood as the inspired and infallible Word of God, we believe, teach, confess and live, and the Lutheran Confessions, which they called look real and credible interpretation of the word of God. Tasks and objectives

The ILC has taken on the task of representing confessional Lutheran theology in doctrine and life and spread. This will be done by

Organizational Structure

The official duties, the ILC practice, the Chairman, the Vice Chairman and the Secretary General. There is also an Executive Committee, which consist of the Chairman, Vice Chairman, the Secretary and additional representatives from the continents of Africa, East Asia, South Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and Australia. This committee has the task to address the objectives (see tasks and goals) and implement it.

The Secretary General shall undertake the task of administrative and technical support to the member churches. The current (2010) Secretary General is the former presiding minister of the Lutheran Church in Canada, Ralph Mayan. The Lutheran member churches are held by their number of baptized members to contribute to the costs of the tasks of the ILC. Every two years there is a conference of the member churches. Currently (2007) belong to the ILC 34 member churches. The ILC is not a church body and assumes no ecclesiastical functions.
