International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients

International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients ( INCI abbreviation from the English. International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) refers to the international guideline for the correct specification of the ingredients ( Ingredients) of cosmetics.

This nomenclature is especially allergy sufferers the opportunity to test a product before buying it for harmful ingredients.

The specification of the cosmetic ingredients according to the INCI system is implemented mandatory in the European Union since 1997 by law and by the relevant state laws (for example, in Germany § 5a, paragraph 4 KosmetikV ). The names of the INCI rarely match the names of chemical compounds. For Perfume 26 potentially allergenic fragrances are listed.

In the U.S., a room at the specifications of the CTFA ( Chemistry, Toiletry and Fragrance Association ), now the Personal Care Products Council, oriented nomenclature used, which differs in detail (for example, AQUA - Water). The trend is, however, in the direction of uniform global INCI names. New INCI names can be registered free of charge on the website of the Personal Care Products Council.

Requirements for the listing of cosmetic ingredients according to INCI

  • The ingredients are listed in order of proportion by weight in descending order. This applies to all components, each representing about 1 % of the content.
  • Ingredients contained less than 1 % will not be listed in the above mentioned order.
  • Dyes are listed at the end of the collection with the respective CI numbers (CI = color index ). A special sorting or order is not mandatory. In cosmetics in various colors, the dyes used in the variants are listed in square brackets. One marked " / -" indicates that not all the colors mentioned are included in the product, for example: [ / - CI12700, CI14270, CI20470 ].
  • To protect the formulation may be requested for special ingredients confidentiality. Such ingredients are listed by a seven -digit code, for example 600277D or ILN5643.
