International Philosophy Olympiad

The International Philosophy Olympiad ( IPO) is an international essay contest for students and is one of the Science Olympiads. Each participating country sends two candidates win, the host country provides ten.

The IPO was founded in 1993 on the initiative of Bulgaria, Germany, Poland, Romania and Turkey. In the meantime, take students participate from around 40 countries. They IPO is supported by the FISP (Fédération Internationale des Sociétés de Philosophie ) and UNESCO.

Expiry of the qualification in German-speaking countries

The qualification for the IPO is very similar in the three German-speaking countries Germany, Austria and Switzerland despite minor national variations.

As a founding country, Germany has since 1994 regularly participates in the IPO. The qualification is in the state of North Rhine -Westphalia on a two stage process. From the submitted essays the state competition four essays will be selected from each of the five governmental districts. Their authors or author and 5 more from other states ( for a total of 25 participants) will be invited to Philosophical Winter Academy in Munster. As part of a four-day seminar, the philosophical Applicants write their essays ( in English or French), which are selected by two participants for the IPO.

Austria was considered a participating country for the first time in 2005 in Warsaw ( Poland) represented at the IPO. However, 2004 was already an Austrian as a member of the German delegation in Seoul (South Korea) with it. The qualification is via a two-step process. In the first stage, the state competition, the authors or authors of the two or three best essays each state are selected. This will be invited to Philosophy Academy, takes place in the framework of the national competition. By a further essay contest to two participants for the IPO to be determined.

Switzerland was represented first time in 2006 in Cosenza (Italy ) at the IPO. At the Swiss Philosophy Olympiad all students can participate if they have not yet matured. The qualification is via a two-step process. From the the submitted essays of the first round are the best selected and invited their authors or authors to Bern to philosophy Academy. Here, the two participants are selected for the IPO.

Operation of the Contest

The IPO will take four to five days. In general, the competition will take place upon arrival at the venue on the first day. It must be written a philosophical essay on a theme set by four. This must be done in the languages ​​German, English, French or Spanish, but the language chosen neither mother nor may its official language of the country of origin. The essays will be judged by the terraces teachers as well as Secretary of the FISP. The best essays will be rewarded with gold, silver and bronze medals or awards ( honorable mention ).
