International Polar Year

The International Polar Year ( short for IPY International Polar Year ) is an international program for the exploration of the polar regions, coordinated by the International Council for Science ( International Council for Science, ICSU ) with national funding, which was located from 2007 to 2008 carried out for the fourth time.

Carl Weyprecht, an Austria - Hungarian naval officer who initiated the first Polar Year ( 1882-1883 ), but did not live to its beginning. 50 years later ( 1932-1933 ) the second Polar Year was held. The International Geophysical Year was inspired by the IPY and took place with the third Polar Year ( 1957-1958 ).

The fourth IPY began in March 2007 and lasted until March 2009.
