International Political Science Association

The International Political Science Association ( IPSA, French: Association Internationale de Science Politique, AISP ) is an international professional association of political science, with approximately 3,600 individual members. Their purpose is to global networking and promotion of political science. The office of the organization is headquartered in Montreal, Canada. President since 2012, the US-American Helen Milner.

History and Members

The IPSA was established in 1949 under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris founded with the goal of building the political science world as an academic discipline, to promote cooperation between political scientists and to establish an international policy research community. Especially in emerging democracies and developing countries makes the IPSA through advisory services and the initiation of collaborations to help build a political science research and teaching. In addition to the individual members, the IPSA currently has 52 national political science professional associations as collective members, including the German Political Science Association ( DVPW ). In addition, about 100 research facilities institutional members of the IPSA. The organization has in turn consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations ( ECOSOC), at UNESCO and is a member of the International Social Science Council.

Activities

The IPSA organized biennial world congresses with up to 2,000 participants, most recently in 2012 in Madrid. The next World Congress will be held in Montreal on the topic Challenges of Contemporary Governance in July 2014. Under the umbrella of IPSA have 52 thematic Research Committee established working at sub-disciplines of political science and in turn align numerous smaller conferences, congresses and meetings. Furthermore, the IPSA Summer Schools organized for social science methods training. The IPSA is also characterized by an extensive publication activities. The organization is inter alia Editor of the journals International Political Science Review, International Political Science Abstracts and Participation. Furthermore, IPSA publishes the International Encyclopedia of Political Science and informed with a monthly newsletter about developments and job postings in the international political science. Every three years, the IPSA award in memory of the Czechoslovak / American political scientist Karl W. German Karl German Award for outstanding lifetime achievements in political science. Previous winners were Gabriel Almond (1997 ), Jean Laponce (2000), Juan Linz (2003 ), Charles Tilly (2006), Giovanni Sartori (2009) and Alfred Stepan (2012 ). Next gives the IPSA since 2006 a prize on behalf of the Mattei Dogan Foundation for outstanding achievements in political science. Prize winners were previously Guillermo O'Donnell (2006 ), Philippe Schmitter (2009 ) and Klaus von Beyme (2012 ). In addition, the IPSA provides a range of prices for young talent, travel grants and awards to outstanding research.
