International Sailing Federation

The International Sailing Federation (ISAF ) has a worldwide federation in sailing. It was founded as International Yacht Racing Union ( ISAF ) in October 1907 in Paris. Its headquarters is now in Southampton ( Hampshire, UK) Since 5 August 1996, the association is now called the International Sailing Federation.

Currently, the ISAF has 116 member countries. Takes you 82 boat classes, divided by olympic ( Sword ) dinghies, keelboats, multihulls and surfboards and boats, such as the eight classes of boat category, this internationally recognized and classic.

For international sailing events such as the World Cup or the Olympics, the ISAF trains qualified national race director, referee and umpire on and appoint them if they meet the conditions and requirements of International Judges ( International referees ), International Race Officer ( International Race Officer ) and International Umpires. They are appointed to the corresponding competitions of the ISAF.

Worldwide there are only about 400 sailors, who are authorized to International Judge, as well as about 110 International Umpire and approximately 210 International Race Officers. The combination of individual rights is possible.

It is undesirable on the part of ISAF, that a race director at the same event also has duties as a referee or umpire. However, it is possible that (eg the Kiel Week ) referees are on a race at the same umpire in that they have both permissions and were appointed accordingly.
