International Simón Bolívar Prize

The Simón Bolívar Prize (English: International Simón Bolívar Prize ), the UNESCO recognized outstanding contributions that, consistent with the objectives of the South American independence fighter Simón Bolívar for " freedom, independence and dignity of peoples and to strengthen a new international economic contribute social and cultural order ", where the merits could be acquired in the intellectual, artistic and social fields, and mobilizing public opinion. In 1978 at the suggestion of then- Venezuelan President Carlos Andrés Pérez launched award was presented for the first time in 1983 and most recently in 2004. Reactivation is under discussion.

The award should be done every two years to July 24, the birthday of Simón Bolívar, according to the underlying policies. In fact, occurred 1983-2004 nine awards, in 1983, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2004. Prize money was donated by the Venezuelan government and fixed by the said agreement with the Director-General of UNESCO. Recently the price was worth 25,000 U.S. dollars. The laureates were chosen by unanimous vote an international jury, in addition to five representatives of the various regions of the world, a certain person by the Venezuelan government and a representative of the Director-General of UNESCO included.
