International Soccer League

The International Soccer League ( ISL) was a football league in the United States of 1960 until 1965. Divided into two groups played in their annual changing -known European and American teams, 1960, for example, FC Bayern Munich and 1961 Dukla Prague, later, for example, West Ham United or Werder Bremen.

History

The ISL was founded in 1960 by William D. Cox, a former owner of the Philadelphia Phillies baseball club. Cox believed that a football league to set up in the United States.

The International Soccer League played during the U.S. off-season mainly European teams in two groups of four to eight teams once each against each other. The group winners met in 1960 in a game, then return the game to play the ISL Championship.

After 1961 Dukla Prague had dominated the ISL, was launched from the following year, the so-called American Challenge Cup to life, took on the Dukla against the master of the ISL. In these comparisons, the Prague army club was always victorious until 1965.

The games of the ISL were mainly held in New York, other venues were among other Montreal, Chicago, Detroit, Chicopee, Guadalajara, Cleveland and then Boston and Los Angeles.

The so-called Dwight D. Eisenhower Trophy was among the best players in the league.

Although the league has developed well, the summer of 1965 was the last season. The American Association USSFA opposed the " import " of foreign teams and Cox was forced to dissolve the ISL.
