International Society for Contemporary Music
The International Society for Contemporary Music ( ISCM ) is the oldest international umbrella organization for the promotion of new music. She is considered one of the most important music societies in the world. In German-speaking countries it is also known as International Society for Contemporary Music ( ISCM ).
Organization
The ISCM was originally an initiative of the Second Viennese School during the Salzburg Festival. It was on August 11, 1922 on the initiative of Rudolf Réti and Egon Wellesz and in the presence of the composer Béla Bartók, Paul Hindemith, Arthur Honegger, Zoltán Kodály, Darius Milhaud, and Anton Webern, and in the absence of Alban Berg, Maurice Ravel, Ottorino Respighi, Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky founded at Café Bazar in Salzburg. After Richard Strauss had assumed the chairmanship of the founding committee, Edward Dent was elected the first president. Seat of the ISCM was London.
The secretariat of the organization is now in Amsterdam. The ISCM sees itself as an international network for the promotion of new music.
The ISCM has 49 international sections (as of 2008 ) in individual countries. These are usually independent of the parent organization and send delegates to the Annual Meeting of the ISCM. The members of the sections are also members of the ISCM; they can propose up to six stations for the performance at the World Music Days. National organizations that promote contemporary music, but do not possess the status of a regional section of the ISCM can be performed as associate members. This status is also transmitted to the members of these organizations. Individual professional musicians are listed as honorary members.
The ISCM is the " World New Music Magazine " out.
World Music Days
One central task is the organization of the World Music Days (World New Music Days ), which take place at different locations each year. As part of the World Music Days will be held a members meeting of the organization in addition to musical events for new music.
