Survey

The ISAN (International Standard Audiovisual Number) is a voluntary numbering system allows identification of audiovisual works. It is a unique, internationally recognized and permanent reference number for each audiovisual work registered in the ISAN system.

The ISAN identifies works, not publications or broadcasts. The ISAN does not change, no matter what format is published a work (eg, DVD, Video, TV broadcasting ) or the purposes for which the work is used.

Structure of ISAN

Originally, the ISAN of 16 hexadecimal digits, which are divided into two segments:

  • ISAN 0000-0000 - 16ff -0000- Y - is a root segment of 12 digits for the identification of a work
  • ISAN 0000-0000 - 16ff -0000- Y - a segment of 4 digits for identification of episodes of an audiovisual work.
  • ISAN 0000-0000 - 16ff -0000- Y - a check letter is added in order to detect input errors.

End of 2005, the ISAN has been extended to 24 hexadecimal digits:

  • ISAN 0000-0000 - 16ff -0000- Y -0000 -0000- 9 - the extra eight digits allow to distinguish individual versions of a work. In addition, a further check letter was added to validate all the ISAN so at the end.

For storage, it is not necessary, mitzuspeichern the check letter, they can be recalculated if necessary. This also applies to the division into groups of four, it is useful to the human reader. The abbreviation " ISAN " is prefixed to distinguish the number of different identification numbers.

The ISAN is a " dumb " number, ie it does not include code or other identifying elements ( such as the " speaking " ISBN number ); it does not contain information about the rights of a work situation. One can only deduce the affiliation of an episode of a series or one version to work.
