Theological opinions

Since 1969 the Commission has published 21 reports. The latest advice to the limbus (2007) was perceived by wide circles of society and misinterpreted by the media as " abolition of purgatory ."

Discussion of liberation theology

The Theological Commission have been working since 1974 with the liberation theology apart, which was largely rejected by the Commissioners. In October 1976, the CTI dealt at their annual meeting in Rome, attended by, inter alia, Hans Urs von Balthasar and Karl Lehmann, with the topic. The subsequent explanation to the relationship of human welfare and Christian salvation with which they occurred in August 1977 to the public caused a sensation and led to the hard line of the CDF against this theological school in the 1980s. The declaration was assumed that liberation theology between material prosperity and spiritual healing to each other sit in a stationary manner always already in relationship. The ratio must remain in principle open and indeterminate.

From the side of liberation theology was critically noted that not a single liberation theologian belonged to the body, but rather a declared opponent of liberation theology as Bonaventura Kloppenburg. The Leonardo Boff and Clodovis brethren wrote to the statement that it remained " below the level that you legitimately from a qualified body as might have been expected. "
