International Traditional Karate Federation

The International Traditional Karate Federation ( ITKF, known in Japan as Dento Karate Kokusai Renmei ) is an association founded by Hidetaka Nishiyama international governing body for traditional karate.

On September 27, 1974, the International Traditional Karate Federation was founded under the name of International Amateur Karate Federation. In 1986 came the name change to International Traditional Karate Federation. The whole time it was a matter of who gets the recognition by the IOC. The WUKO or ITKF.

The IAKF led almost the same time and place through their world championships such as the WUKO. 1975 in California and 1977 in Tokyo, Japan. More championships and competitions followed.

In order to make olympic karate, sent Nishiyama 1976 an application to the International Olympic Committee. In the early 1990s, the ITKF and the World Union of Karate Do Organization ( WUKO ) should join together for this purpose, but this was not realized and represented a major setback for Karate at the Olympics. The WUKO and the International Traditional Karate Federation ( ITKF ) then formed a confederation which three years later ( 1993) of IOC was recognized as the sole world governing body for karate sport, the World Karate Federation ( WKF ).
