International Union of Microbiological Societies
The International Union of Microbiological Societies ( IUMS, International Association of microbiological societies ) is one of 29 (in 2006 ) scientific federations of the International Council for Science ( ICSU, International Council for Science ).
Tasks and objectives
The objectives of the IUMS include:
- Promotion of the microbiological sciences through international cooperation
- Organization of congresses
- Assistance in the publication of scientific results
- Representation of the microbiological sciences in ICSU and in contact with other international organizations.
Organization
The IUMS has three departments:
- Bacteriology and Applied Microbiology (BAM )
- Mycology
- Virology
Each of these three sections has its own governing board and organizes its own international congresses. In addition, the IUMS has 16 other specialized commissions and associations: International Committee of six, eight international commissions and two international federations.
For the period 2005 to 2008 Prof. Dr. Karl -Heinz Schleifer of the Technical University Munich ( Freising Weihenstephan ) was elected IUMS president.
History
The IUMS was founded in 1927. The IUMS was formerly a member of the International Union of Biological Sciences ( IUBS ); became independent in 1980 and is one of the ICSU since 1982 as one of 29 Scientific Unions (as of 2006).
