The International University Vienna was a private provider of educational services in Vienna, Austria with evangelical orientation. It was founded in 1980 as the "European Christian College " with the main office in Vienna. She was the first and only private university whose accreditation has been revoked by the Austrian Accreditation Council. In May 2011, the Vienna Commercial Court ordered the closure of the association, after the reorganization of the insolvent company had failed.

The operation has been temporarily taken over by the Serbian megatrend private university as a branch called "Megatrend International University of Vienna". This also fell into bankruptcy and was closed in February 2013.

Revocation of accreditation as a private university

The IU Vienna was briefly accredited in Austria as a private university, but this status by the Austrian Accreditation was revoked with effect 31 July 2003, as the necessary conditions for the accreditation was not available. This was the first and so far only revocation of accreditation a university in Austria.

The initial accreditation took place on 4 January 2001. Though intended as an accreditation period in UniAkkG five years, the accreditation was due to some critical points (permanent staff, staff recruitment procedures, research at the institution, library) for only three years. In 2002, the withdrawal of accreditation was announced and finally approved in March 2003. The justification in addition to the O.A. Cited deficiencies that the financial management was not traceable and the practice of admission to studies did not meet international regulatory requirements. In the interest of students of the cancellation occurred only at the end of July 31, 2003. This should be given to the students of the International University the opportunity to complete the semester with the planned credits and move to other universities.

Legal Status of degrees

Have been awarded at the IU Vienna acquired academic degrees, which at the time of accreditation (4 January 2001 to 31 July 2003), are considered to be Austrian academic degrees. They may thus, for example, also be conducted in Germany legally and without additional origin. By the end of 2002 (the last full year of accreditation ), the IU Vienna had 133 students.

Due to the withdrawal of accreditation, the International University Vienna was allowed since July 31, 2003 do not confer academic degrees more. The training was, however, continued. According to earlier information provided by the IU Vienna their bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs from the U.S. state of Alabama ( Department of Post Secondary Education) would be licensed. The " Alabama Community College System" listed on their website "The International University " in Montgomery, Alabama to train as one of those post-secondary education facilities that were licensed by the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education, citizens of Alabama. The website has but with emphasis suggests that this license does not mean accreditation. The Oregon Office of Degree Authorization lists the International University Vienna as " unaccredited degree suppliers" and recommends prospective students and employers to verify the legality of the use of contracts awarded by such institutions degrees before.

An article in the daily newspaper "Die Presse " reported on 15 December 2008 that academic degrees may not be performed, and the recognition in Alabama was not carried out by a public authority accreditation.

Due to the withdrawal of the Austrian accreditation, the International University Vienna is not recognized in Germany as a university.
