International Year of Languages

The year 2008 was declared by the United Nations on 16 May 2007 by a resolution of the International Year of Languages. The year is to promote multilingualism, linguistic diversity and thus cultural diversity and respect for other languages.

UNESCO was entrusted with the patronage of the speech year and announced an International Mother Language Day on 21 February 2008.
