Internet Protocol Control Protocol

The Internet Protocol Control Protocol ( IPCP ) is a protocol that is used for automatic configuration of computers, which typically connect to a network via a dial-up connection as analog modem, ISDN or DSL.

When configured through IPCP such as the IP address, default gateway, and DNS server for the dial-in workstation are reported. Furthermore, the compression algorithm could for example be defined by IPCP. Accordingly IPCP works similarly to DHCP on Ethernet networks, but for dial-up connections ( point-to -point connections ).

IPCP is considered NCP ( Network Control Protocol ) for the Internet Protocol (IP) over PPP due to its function. IPXCP is analogous to the NCP IPX over PPP.
