Interrex (Poland)

The Interrex was especially during the Wahlkönigtums 1572-1795 after the death or removal of the previous king, the Acting Head of State ( Regent ) until the election of a new king.

Function

The Office continued the Interrex in ancient Rome. In general, the Archbishop of Gniezno was incumbent as Primate of Poland. Should this be prevented for any reason, acted as the bishop of Cujavia Interrex. In practice, however, the Constitution also took over other bishops office.

The Interrex proclaimed the death or deposition of the King. As a temporary head of state Interrex represented the state externally and internally. He was under certain circumstances be entitled to declare war or to start peace negotiations.

With the proclamation of the death or deposition of the King of Interrex announced a Sejm of handling the urgent business and the scheme of the provisions until the election of a new king. He presided over the then Konvokationsreichstag and the Reichstag election.
