Introgression

Introgression describes the motion of a gene, chromosome, chromosome segment or genome from one species to another, ie, the principle and the result, as can be created by conventional breeding displacement high-performance breeds that carry a particular feature.

Introgression is achieved mostly by means of various backcrossing method in order eliminate unwanted side effects. The type supplied genes are mostly coming from related wild species or of species from closely related genera.

Through modern " embryo rescue" - and somatic hybridization method, the introgression of foreign genes has gained new impetus in crops. Great practical significance introgression has long been attained in cereal breeding, especially in wheat.
