Inveraray

Inveraray (Gaelic: Inbhir Aora ) is a village in the Scottish unitary authority Argyll and Bute. It is located on the shores of Loch Fyne Merresarmes at the entrance of the Bay Holy Loch are approximately 32 kilometers north- west of Helensburgh and southeast of Oban. At the 1991 census, 512 inhabitants were recorded in Inveraray. Thus, the population has remained virtually unchanged since 1951.

History

The original Inveraray was a little north of the present village. During the construction of Inveraray Castle by Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll in the second half of the 18th century, today Inveraray was built as a planned city from 1743. The buildings of the old settlement near the castle were demolished 1758-1776. As architects were responsible for the planning of new buildings substantially William Adam, John Adam and Robert Mylne.

Traffic

Inveraray is located just off the A83, which links the Kintyre peninsula to the Central Belt. To the north leads the A819, which ends at the A85 between Oban and Crianlarich. A connection to the railway network is not and was not present in the past. Until the 20th century a ferry from Glasgow operated the pier regularly. The operation was then adjusted, however.

Attractions

In the region of Inveraray is a tourist center. The majority of the inner region of Inveraray is a listed building. Sun, 23 buildings or group of buildings alone are listed in the highest category A Scottish monument. There are also ten other Category A buildings on the lands of Inveraray Castle outside of the village. The buildings in the village are built in the Georgian style and often plastered with Harl and whitewashed. A few kilometers south of the town 's historic museum village Auchindrain is located.
