Inyo National Forest

The Inyo National Forest is a national forest in the United States of America. He is for the most part ( 7445.76 km ²) in the state of California, to a lesser extent ( 245.47 km ²) in the western part of the state of Nevada. It comprises the southern Sierra Nevada east of the main ridge between Yosemite National Park and the southern part of Sequoia National Park. Also for the Inyo National Forest include the White and Inyo Mountains to the east of the Sierra, separated from it by the Owens Valley. In the south of Sequoia National Forest closes in the center side of the Sierra crest of the Sierra National Forest and north of the Bridgeport Ranger District of the Humboldt - Toiyabe National Forest on. Large portions of the National Forest are designated as Wilderness Area, the most severe class of protected natural areas in the United States.

Establishment and support

The name " Inyo " goes back to a designation by the Native American word meaning " dwelling place of the Great Spirit ". Others

The highest point in Nevada, Boundary Peak ( top border ) is located in the White Mountains also in the Inyo National Forest, directly on the border with California.

Other tourist attractions in the Inyo National Forest and the surrounding area include the lakes Mono Lake ( a Natron with extraordinary ecosystem and a bizarre landscape ), Tioga Lake, June Lake and the Tioga Pass, Mount Whitney ( the highest mountain in the United States outside of Alaska ) and the tourist centers Lone Pine and Mammoth Lakes.

Within the Inyo National Forest are the wilderness sanctuaries South Sierra Wilderness, Golden Trout Wilderness, John Muir Wilderness, Ansel Adams Wilderness, Boundary Peak Wilderness, and Hoover Wilderness. They are all Wilderness Areas not accessible by roads and such may only be entered on foot and with the aid of horses or mules. Mountain bikes are prohibited. The long-distance footpaths Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail run on a short section north of the Yosemite National Park jointly by the National Forest.
