Ioan James

Ioan Mackenzie James ( often cited as IM James, * May 23, 1928 ) is a British mathematician who deals with topology.

Life and work

James attended St. Paul 's School in London and then ( he whose collected works 1962/3 issued ) studied on a scholarship at Oxford University mathematics at Queen's College at JHC Whitehead, where he specialized in topology. In 1954/55 he was at Princeton University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Institute for Advanced Study. In 1956 he was a Research Fellow at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University in 1957 and again in Oxford, where he was until 1969 Reader and from 1959 Senior Research Fellow of St John 's College. In 1970 he was Savilian Professor of Geometry at Oxford and a Fellow of New College. In 1995 he retired.

James has been dealing with homotopy theory (for example, by Stiefel manifolds, spheres bundles ), partly in collaboration with his teacher Henry Whitehead. He is the editor of a paper tape on the history of topology, a standard reference.

James is since 1968 a Fellow of the Royal Society. He is a member of the London Mathematical Society, whose treasurer he was long and which he was president from 1984 to 1986. In 1959 he was awarded the Junior Berwick Prize in 1978 and the Senior Whitehead Prize. He became an honorary professor of the University of Wales in 1989. He is Honorary Fellow of St. John 's College, Oxford and Honorary Doctor of the University of Aberdeen. Since its founding in 1962, he is the editor of the journal Topology.
