Iomys

Iomys horsfieldii davisoni

The Horsfield flying squirrel ( Iomys ) are a widespread species of flying squirrels in Southeast Asia. Two types are counted in this genus:

  • Horsfield flying squirrel, Iomys horsfieldii ( Waterhouse 1838), Malay Peninsula, Java, Sumatra, Borneo
  • Mentawai flying squirrel, Chasen & Kloss Iomys Sipora 1928 Mentawai Islands

The actual Horsfield flying squirrel is the much more widespread and better known Art It is known as Javanese flying squirrels, but the extent of its range is not fair. His fur is colored reddish brown on the upper side and lower side grayish. Sometimes the abdominal region has an orange tinge. The body length is 20 cm, added 18 inch cock.

In contrast, the Mentawai Flying Squirrel, is confined to two of the Mentawai Islands, which are upstream of the coast of Sumatra. Because of its small distribution area it is performed endangered by the IUCN status.
