Ion Calvocoressi

Ion Calvocoressi, Ion Melville Calvocoressi actually ( born April 12, 1919 in Calcutta, † July 7, 2007 in England) was a British officer and stockbroker Greek descent.

Life

Calvocoressi was a son of Matthew John Calvocoressi and his wife Agnes Hermione Melville. Father's side he was related to the firm Ralli Brothers, among others maternal Michael Linning Melville. The writer Peter Calvocoressi was his cousin.

Along with his parents he came to London in 1922. He completed his schooling at Eton College and then studied Modern Languages ​​at Magdalen College (University of Oxford). After the outbreak of World War II Calvocoressi joined the British Army and came in 1940 to the Scots Guards. He fought, inter alia, in Libya and Egypt. As a forward observer was wounded in July 1942 and came to his recovery as aide- de-camp ( ADC ) to Lieutenant General Oliver Leese.

After the war Calvocoressi returned to his homeland and settled in West Ham ( Kent). He lived there in the near Winston Churchill's country house Chartwell. On 29 April 1947 he married Katherine Kennedy and had with her four children: James ( b. 1948 ), Richard ( b. 1951 ), Andrew and Iona. He was the brother of the playwright Royce Ryton and the journalist Ludovic Kennedy, through marriage.

On Calvocoressis significant initiative a memorial to Winston Churchill in 1965 in Westham built; created by sculptor Oscar Nemon.

Politically interested and engaged had Calvocoressi 1978-1979 the office of High Sheriff of Kent held.
