Ion Geolgău

Ion Geolgău ( born February 20, 1961 in Pielesti, Dolj county ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach. The midfielder played 303 games in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A.

Career as a player

The career of Ion Geolgău began in 1976, when he came into the first team squad of his home club Universitatea Craiova at the age of 15 years. On November 7, 1976, he earned his first use in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A (now League 1). It first was used only irregularly, he was in the 1979/80 season to key players and had such a large share of winning the championship. This title could be repeated a year later, together with cup win.

The most successful season in the career of Geolgău was the 1982 season / 83. In the league, although it was enough only for runners behind Dinamo Bucharest, but he again won the Romanian Cup and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, where the club was eliminated only on away goals against Benfica.

In the following years with Uni Craiova Geolgău could not go on from the great success, but remained a regular in the top flight of the league and the European Cup. After losing in the 1989/90 season his place, he left the club during the winter break and moved on to league rivals FC Arges Pitesti.

In the summer of 1990 Geolgău moved abroad and joined the Cypriot club Aris Limassol, before he moved to Belgium to Avenir Lembeek a year later. Within a year he returned to Romania and played one year for Jiul IELIF Craiova in Divizia C, before he ended his career in 1993.

National

Ion Geolgău played 24 games for the Romanian national football team, scoring three goals. He made his debut when he came on in the 60th minute for Tudorel Stoica on September 10, 1980 in a friendly against Bulgaria. On his second mission, he had to wait more than a year, but also did not come in 1982 on the role of a substitute player also.

Geolgău was not until the 1983 regular player and shot with his goal on 30 November 1983 against Czechoslovakia his country for the European Championship 1984., Where not appointed National coach Mircea Lucescu in but in his squad.

In the following years Geolgău was rarely used and played his last international match on 1 June 1988 in a friendly against the Netherlands.

Career as a coach

After his playing career was Geolgău football coach. In the 1994/95 season he was in charge Jiul Petrosani in Divizia B, before he became an assistant coach his home club Universitatea Craiova.

In 1998 he moved to the Faroe Islands, where he took over the record champions HB Tórshavn. With HB he could win the double of league and cup victory in 1998. In the summer of 2002, the club from him and Geolgău separated hired from the start of the 2003 season when local rivals B36 Tórshavn. Here he again succeeded in winning the cup.

After the season Geolgău left the Faroe Islands and moved to Iceland to Fram Reykjavik. After 8th place in the championship, the club parted but from him again.

In February 2012, he signed a three month contract as an assistant coach of Aurel Ţicleanu the Kuwaiti Al Tadamon second division.
