Ion Panait

Ion Iulian " Ionut " Panait (born 5 May 1981 in Mizil, Prahova County ) is a Romanian wrestler. He was 2008 Vice European Champion in Greco-Roman wrestling in lightweight.

Career

Ionut Panait began as a teenager in 1991 with the rings. Since joining the police, he is a member of the Sport Club Dinamo Bucharest. He is a police officer. He wrestles exclusively in the Greco- Roman style, and is trained by Niculae Zamfir. Since 2007 he wrestles for the SV Germania Weingarten in the German Bundesliga, where he acts very successful.

As a junior, he reached at the Junior World Championship 1997 in Maribor in the weight class up to 52 kg body weight and at the Junior European Championships in 1998 in Tirana in the weight category to 56 kg of body weight each a good 4th place and missed so both times only just to win a medal.

Although he clearly dominated in Romania as a senior in the lightweight class, the transition to the senior citizens proved in international championships for Ionut Panait difficult. It took some years until he achieved good results in these championships. In 2004, he came at the European Championships in Haparanda with three wins and one defeat against Frenchman Michael Beyer on the 7th Place. Qualifying for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens but he could not.

In 2005, he came at the European Championships in Varna to victories over Yuri Kaliaschnew from Belarus and Tiziano Corriga from Italy and one defeat against Jimmy Samuelsson from Sweden on the 8th Place.

In 2008 it then at the European Championships in Tampere scored the first winning a medal at an international championship. He was there with wins over Alexei Dschakonow, Lithuania, and Plamen Petrov Tiziano Corriga from Bulgaria and a defeat against poor Vardanyan of Ukraine European vice-champion. At the Olympic Games in Beijing, for which he had qualified with this success, he was defeated in his first battle against the Chinese Li Yanyan very close on points (0-2 rounds at 3:3 equal points ) and did so within the 13. At the European Championships 2009 in Vilnius he defeated in the lightweight Yuri Weschew from Israel and Ismail Navarro Sanchez from Spain, and then lost in the quarterfinals against Damian Zuba from Poland. Since this did not reach the final, Ionut retired Panait, finishing in 8th place.
